Henry M. Robert



Brigadier General Henry Martyn Robert (May 2, 1837 – May 11, 1923) was a military engineer who became well known as the author of Robert’s Rules of Order. He was born in South Carolina, raised in Ohio, and nominated to West Point, where he graduated in 1857 as a military engineer.  During the Civil War he worked in the Corps of Engineers on the defenses of Philadelphia, Washington, D.C. and several New England port cities.  Following the War he served in the Pacific Division in Oregon and Washington, followed by work on Green Bay and other Great Lakes ports. His work took him to the harbors in the New York and Philadelphia areas and to the Cumberland, Tennessee, and Mississippi Rivers.  He was president of the Board of Engineers from 1895 to 1901, and made Chief Engineer just before his retirement in 1901. After retiring he chaired the engineering group the constructed the seawall in Galveston, Texas following the Hurricane of 1900. He died in 923 and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
