Robert Frost: Early Poems combines the first two of Robert Frost’s published volumes. A Boy’s Will is the first book of poems by Frost and was published in 1913. The title comes from a line on Longfellow’s “My Lost Youth”, and the collection deals with the ideas of development and maturity. The pastoral settings paint a distinctively New England landscape and give rise to questions of the relationship of man and nature. North of Boston followed in 1914 and more clearly positions New England as the locus and inspiration of Frost’s work. Containing classic poems such as “Mending Wall”, “Death of the Hired Man”, and “After Apple-Picking”, the collection conjures the sense of time and loss associated with the passing seasons and the sense of isolation and contemplation inherent in the rural environment. The publication of these two volumes established his reputation upon his return from England. By the 1920’s he had become the most celebrated poet in America and remained so for the rest of his life.
