The Age of Reason; Being an Investigation of True and Fabulous Theology is a treatise by political philosopher and activist Thomas Paine that advances the philosophy of Deism, which holds that God exists and is responsible for the creation of the universe, but does not interfere directly with the world that was created. It was popular among intellectuals during the Enlightenment, including the founders of the United States, because it solved problems central to conventional Christian theology such as the Trinity, divine revelation, and the supernatural interpretation of events as miracles, while holding that reason, observation, and natural law were sufficient to confirm the existence of the creator. The premises and arguments deployed were not new, but were made accessible to the masses by Paine’s characteristic engaging, straightforward and irreverent style familiar to readers of his pamphlets Common Sense and The American Crisis. The book was first published in three parts in 1794, 1795, and 1807,which were distributed as inexpensive pamphlets and within the reach of most buyers. It became a bestseller in the United States and led to a revival of the interest in Deism.
