Show Boat is a novel written by Edna Ferber, published in 1926. It tells the story of the lives, loves, and struggles of the performers, stagehands, and dockworkers who are associated with the Cotton Blossom, a fictional Mississippi River show boat. The novel begins in the late 1800s and spans several decades, covering the period of time in which show boats were popular in the United States. The novel follows the lives of the people on the Cotton Blossom, including the boat’s captain and owner, the actors and stagehands, and the dockworkers who load and unload the boat. It also explores the themes of racial prejudice and the struggles of people of color living in the South during this period. One of the main characters, a mixed-race woman named Julie LaVerne, faces discrimination because of her heritage.
